MIDNIGHT SPIROGRAPHS
DOWNTOWN ARTS EVENT BENEFITS LOCAL SHELTER

Midnight Spirographs presents a Los Angeles-themed arts event at Hi-Lite, an artists' collective and gallery space located in downtown Los Angeles. The event on Sunday, September 12 has a suggested door donation of $5. Participating artists include Billy Kheel, Larry Brownstein, Sam Hart, Jason House, Melanie Maton, Molly Millar, Jack Nadelle, Sohrab Nafici, William Pickles, and Sarah Stockstill. Local activist and musician Andre will perform a few songs. Tunes provided by DJ Taco Truck and DJ Logarithm and background visuals created by Michael Pinkney. Knockout Taco Truck will be parked on the street in front and refreshments will be available inside. Proceeds from the door, the bar, and the sale of one piece of artwork per artist benefit The Midnight Mission. After the event, the artwork will be shown until October 12 by appointment only.

Christine Meinders created Midnight Spirographs in 2007, joined by Lisa Turallo in 2008 as partner and in-house DJ. Midnight Spirographs combines recognition for local artists and awareness for the increasing homeless issue in downtown Los Angeles. The event occurs three times a year in different locations around downtown. Each event encourages all forms of art and has hosted music, film, spoken word, live musical performances, and visual arts surrounding a common theme.

The Midnight Mission is one of the oldest continuously operating human services organizations in the Los Angeles region. Centered in the Skid Row area of downtown Los Angeles, the Mission runs one of the most efficient direct service operations in the country. With only four executive managers through out its ninety-five (95) year history, the Mission has been a consistent beacon of light for those with nowhere else to turn. The Mission offers a bridge of self-sufficiency for homeless people through counseling, education, training and job placement.

Midnight Spirographs enlists the help of local artists to create awareness about the issue of homelessness in downtown Los Angeles.

If you'd like more information about this event or to schedule an interview with an artist or the organizers, please contact Lisa Turallo or Christine Meinders at midnightspirographs@gmail.com

Curator Audrey Landreth, Adam Silverman of HEATH and HI-LITE Project Space are pleased to present:

Over several summers in the late 1990s, Reuben Cox would escape the oppressive heat of NYC and head to the rivers of his hometown, Highlands, North Carolina. Using a Leica with a 35mm lens, Cox was free to roam and explore locations near Highlands on a daily basis. Armed simply with his craft and his curiosity, he began to photograph surreptitiously, but by the third summer, he had warmed up to his subjects allowing him to engage in a more intimate approach. As a quiet and friendly observer, Cox's images capture real moments that speak to a greater experience: an American experience of fleeting summer and youth, the thrill of cool water on warm rocks; of goose bumps and distant laughter, of not wanting the sun to go down. They evoke a certain nostalgia for a simpler time and a lyrical, satisfying affinity towards the observance of ordinary people. Cox's images reveal a deep appreciation for the work of photographers such as August Sander, Walker Evans, Helen Levitt, Garry Winogrand and Diane Arbus. While Individual images have been published in The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, and Doubletake, this is the first time the extended series of C-Prints has been shown.

Artist's Opening reception:
Saturday, July 17th From 6-9pm

"Dr. Brown, surreal and visual comedy absurdist, plants his seed in the Los Angeles psyche after a sold-out world tour in Australia, Europe and Canada. 'A largely wordless act of absurdist mime and downright uncomfortable weirdness that may or may not include handcuffs, olives, board games, dancing, sunscreen and a transvestite.'
